Don’t Neglect Your Back This New Year

After the holidays, we feel renewed and refreshed, ready to take on the New Year. That’s a great way to start, but we can’t forget the basics of back care.

If your job requires lifting objects from the floor, you might be tempted to take the quick and easy approach and bend your back to lift something, especially if it’s not too heavy. It doesn’t take a heavy load to injure your back if you use your back muscles instead of your legs to help you with the lifting. Make lifting properly a habit and you won’t be one of the thousands of Australians who suffer from lifting-related back injuries every year:

  1. Stand close to the load with your feet shoulder width apart.
  2. Bend at the knees while looking straight ahead. Try to bend without making your knees go in front of your toes.
  3. Get a good grip on the object you are lifting.
  4. Make sure your back retains its natural curve.
  5. Lift with your leg muscles, not your back muscles.

If your job is more sedentary, your back is still in danger. Slumping in your chair is unnatural and can lead to back problems. Keep your posture erect. For more tips on retaining good posture in the workplace, read Why Good Posture is Important.
