With shorter and colder days coming with the changing seasons, it’s common for many people to experience the “winter blues”, and it’s not just your imagination! Some people experience mood disorders during the colder months, particularly seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
People with mental health disorders can experience a change in their symptoms or worsening of their symptoms in the colder and darker months. However, they’re not the only ones affected with many people only experiencing SAD. Symptoms of SAD include:
- Weight gain
- Experiencing fatigue during the day
- Losing motivation and interest in daily activities
If you spot some of these symptoms in yourself or your friends and family, there are some helpful adjustments that can be made to assist in improving mood. These include:
- Spending more time outside in the sun
- Exercising regularly
- Maintaining social activities
- Maintaining a regular sleep pattern
